Today’s reflection was beautifully sparked by a brilliant video essay from Aperture over on [MSN], The science behind why time goes faster as you age, which set this entire digital stroll in motion.

We often find ourselves wrestling with what feels like the ultimate glitch in the human operating system: why does a week on a sunny beach vanish in an instant, yet feel like an entire lifetime when you look back on it from your desk? This phenomenon, coined the "Holiday Paradox" by psychology writer Claudia Hammond, reveals that our lived experience of time and our memory of it operate on two completely different sets of rules.

If we audit the biological hardware of the human brain, we discover that as children, our physical neurotransmissions are significantly slower. To look at it through the Digital Prism, kids are essentially running on dial-up processing speeds, meaning every single bite of data from the outside world takes an immense amount of cognitive load to render. As Aperture pointed out, because their executive functions and attention spans are actively under construction, even the most basic tasks like eating breakfast or getting dressed feel like they take an eternity.

However, as we step into adulthood, our systems upgrade to a "fiber optic autopilot". The terrifying reality of this data compression is that the moments we live through without forming new memories are the exact blocks of time that literally disappear from our retrospective timeline. We aren't just experiencing time faster; we are actively deleting our own cache.

While older frameworks like the proportionality theory—which suggests a single year feels faster at 50 than at 10 because it represents a mathematically smaller fraction of your total life—make sense from a bird's-eye view, they fail to explain how our perception of time can dramatically stretch or compress in our day-to-day moments. To genuinely reclaim our internal clock, we have to forcefully disable our mental autopilot. As Aperture astutely observes, you don’t need an extravagant vacation to feel refreshed or to slow down your perception of life; you simply need to actively introduce unscripted novelty into your routine by learning a new skill, navigating a new environment, or simply striking up a conversation with a stranger.

Beyond aggressively seeking novelty, we can also take control of our timeline by engaging in a daily manual encoding process. Naturally, our working memory is incredibly short-lived. But instead of staring at a screen until we fall asleep and letting the day evaporate, we can spend a few deliberate minutes vividly reliving the details of our day. By acknowledging the tiny micro-moments—a strange cloud formation, a specific interaction, or even the annoyance of a traffic jam—we force our system to save the file to the hard drive, making our days feel significantly richer and longer in retrospect.
